I have worms in my apples, but how do I tell if they are coddling moth worms?
I don't know, but I was told by my local extension service (still without a fruit specialist, unfortunately) that coddling moths are a problem in Nebraska, so I ordered a coddling moth pheromone kit from www.Gemplers.com (for $15.50). At least, I should be able to tell if I have that problem or not,... assuming I get fruit this year. (And I'm thinking you could probably make a trap easily enough with some tanglefoot, and just buy the pheromones from them - which would be much, much cheaper.)
So many places sell these things in huge quantities, and I'm just a backyard fruit grower. Likewise, I haven't been able to get the sprays that have been recommended for oriental fruit moths*, either. So much of this stuff is aimed at commercial growers (understandably).
[* My extension service says that they don't think that oriental fruit moths are a problem in Nebraska - again, there's no fruit specialist at the university - but I think they're wrong. So I bought an oriental fruit moth pheromone kit from Gemplers, too. We'll see.]
Incidentally, I've seen these big red sticky-balls designed to capture apple maggot moths (which might be the worms in your apples), but I worry that bees would be attracted to them. Won't bees get stuck on a red sticky-ball like this? Anyone know?
