Doug:
Sweet 16 is the absolute finest apple I've ever eaten when properly matured. It doesn't like heat and therefore while at Rocky I had it in this "absolutely great" condition twice in 20 or more years of growing it. It's baggage includes biannual cropping (perhaps not as bad as Spy and other Spy progeny), matures over a long period of time, drops badly, is more than desired sensative to fireblight. That is all I can think of. Also it doesn't store that long when grown in heat.
Another old one from U-MN is Keepsake which is nearly as good flavored as Sweet 16, but ripens very late and is very deliquent in initial bearing year.

Ed, I presume you mean Sweet 16. Sometime when you have a few minutes to
spare, could you tell us about the baggage, as well as any other good
points. I imagine a lot of people would like to know the whole book on a
high quality cold-hardy apple, even if it's the Midwest peformance you
are reporting on.
