Lucky,

Are you saying that pawpaws are not affected by juglone?

Juglone is an aromatic organic compound with the molecular formula C10H6O3.

Juglone is found naturally in the leaves, roots and bark of plants in the Juglandaceae family, particularly the black walnut. Juglone is an allelopathic compound, meaning it is synthesized by one type of plant and affects the growth of another. In the case of juglone, it is toxic or growth-stunting to many types of plants. Landscapers have long known that gardening underneath or near black walnut trees can be difficult. Juglone exerts its affect by inhibiting certain enzymes needed for metabolic function. It is occasionally used as an herbicide.

Just curious if pawpaws are immune.

Tom

Your pawpaws should be fine.  In their natural

habitat, they're understory trees, very frequently

growing in the shade & root zone of large black

walnut trees along creeks and in watercourses through

upland forests.

Subject : RE: [NAFEX] black walnuts and pawpaws

In October I planted two seedling pawpaws in a

sheltered but sunny

location down near the creek. There are many young

black walnut trees

in the area. The two pawpaws are in a clearing, but

we did cut down a

couple of small black walnuts to make room for them.

Will they be OK in the vicinity of the walnuts? I'm

wondering whether

I should plant a grafted pawpaw near them in the

spring. I wouldn't

want to lose my investment in the grafted tree if the

walnuts are

going to make it impossible for the trees to thrive.

thanks,
