There is a current persimmon group with a certain amount of email discussion.
Jerry Lehman is the coordinator. I don't have so much info on hardiness,
but persimmons are notoriously hard to transplant. They really have to be
baby-sat with water the whole of the first growing season or they die below
the graft or simply just die. Jerry prefers to plant seed and later graft
the seedlings. I understand that the problem is that once they leaf out they
don't produce new roots for the rest of the season so that top can outgrow
the roots. Another note While American persimmons won't ripen on the window
sill like the kaki if you can get them to the stage of turning from green
to orange (half half) you can ripen them the rest of the way in a paper bag.
The quality and flavor when I did it seemed as good as off the tree and for
Garretson it was considerably better as tree ripened seemed to have an odd
granular texture like some peaches get. I believe it is a bacterial effect
but it didn't happen with the ones that were picked when they were firm but
starting to turn and then ripened in a paper bag.
