Also worth mentioning is that P. spinosa has diploid (2x) and tetraploid (4x) forms found in Nature. It was found that P. domestica (which is 6x) was the result of a cross between 4x P. spinosa and 2x P. cerasifera to give a 3x hybrid that spontaneously doubled it's chromosomes to give the 6x P. domestica. The whole process was duplicated artificially and the result was identical to wild P. domestica.
I obtained some 4x P. spinosa with the idea of creating some of my own P. domestica type hybrids. The 4x has the larger fruit of the two (2x and 4x) forms.

And here is a nursery selling these subspecies (unfortunately it is in
England):

I've been enjoying a number of British podcasts and blogs and many of
them have talked about sloes and homemade sloe gin. Which has fired
my desire to add Prunus spinosa to my edible landscape. However, not
only have I only found one US nursery selling it (so far), my quick
Googling hasn't turned up any information about improved cultivars.
Are there none? If so, is that because it comes true from seed or is
it because sloes are "good enough" for sloe gin and haven't needed
any improvement? I just want to know what's out there before I pull
the trigger and make an impulse purchase.

Thanks,
