Hallo Lee,

this is exactly my experience: A good Morus nigra cultivar, we have to consider, to one of the best berries/fruits.
No comparison with other Morus.
E.g. at Iran Morus nigra berries are called 'Shah tut' Kings-berries... People are really loving them.
The red juice is also nice - a juice-spot at cotton clothes, will stay red for ever.

ciao
hans

I agree that the flavor of M. nigra is superb -- to me as good or better than any other fruit! I grow mine in a greenhouse here in Zone 5, in a pot, which I move to a cool basement in winter. The greenhouse humidity is quite high in summer, as is my basement in winter, but my plant has not experienced any disease problems. I'm going to graft a branch onto some wild mulberries and see what happens.

You know I meant to ask him more about that.
I wonder what specific fungal problems there were and can it be overcome?
Were there any varieties that may be more resistant?
He also told be the Nigra and rubus/alba can not readily cross because of different chromosome count. I would love to dig into that further to see if anyone has tried working with halving or doubling them to make them match. I have had some Morus nigras in CA that were heavenly! I do have "Noir of Spain" in the yard that is growing very weakly. I hope it will settle in and begin to take off. I got it from Hidden Springs Nursery. They have it in green house - it seems to do fine.

I always love the talks at the NAFEX meeting, but there is so little time to delve into questions from everyone and keep on schedule.

I had AJs email at one time, but I need to get it again.

According to A.J. Bullard who is from North Carolina and spoke on
Mulberries at the last NAFEX Meeting, Morus nigra does poorly on
the east coast due to fungal problems brought on by high
humidity. It apparently dies from the fungal problems as much or
more than hardiness issues there.
