According to A.J. Bullard who is from North Carolina and spoke on Mulberries
at the last NAFEX Meeting, Morus nigra does poorly on the east coast due to
fungal problems brought on by high humidity. It apparently dies from the
fungal problems as much or more than hardiness issues there.
