On the subject of Asians.
We have tried to spread the branches the same as our apple trees.
Yet they seem to be very brittle and snap away from the trunk even
with mild pressure. Has anyone had the same experience ?
Should we let Asians grow out on their own and prune only ?
Thanks Anthony Curcio NW,IL.

KOREAN GIANTS USUALLY RIPEN IN MID-GEORGIA SEPT 7-10. WITH THE HEAT
THIS SUMMER A FEW DAYS EARLIER. THE BEST WAY I'VE FOUND ON ASIAN
PEARS IS CUT INTO THE CORE, IF THE SEEDS ARE BLACK OR NEARLY BLACK
THE FRUIT IS RIPE. I WILL BRING SOME "SHOW-AND-TELL" KOREAN GIANTS
TO THE CLEMSON MEETINGS, THEY WILL BE ABOUT A WEEK SHORT OF RIPE
BUT WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR TASTE TEST.

My grafted two-fer Asian pear tree is loaded this year with Stark's Giants (Korean Giant) fruit. The grafts have one Shinseki fruit. All bagged and they look terrific. How do you tell when Asian pears are ripe? The tree produced one pear last year, the second season in the ground, and I arbitrarily picked it when it looked yellow. It was a bit over ripe, lacking some of the crunch, but still very good.

You can go out at night and place a flashlight right up against the fruit. They will become very translucent when ripe.

Just so you can see the difference what climate can do I am responding to this question too. Here in western Washington the Korean Giants ripen about the last of October, varying a little each year by how much heat we have in October. Checking the seeds is a good way to tell if they are ripe. I do that and also give them the ole taste test. Some varieties start dropping their fruit too and if that happens you better do some testing. Sometimes fruit will preharvest drop too so you have to watch out for that.

Is this for real? What an interesting way to gauge ripeness.
