In the 1970s the Summerland BC station of Agriculture Canada published a booklet on BC fruit cultivars containing a table on coldhardiness of sweet cherries. They concluded that the hardiest sweets they had tested were Salmo (their own breeding) and Hudson (from the NY state Geneva station). Both are self-sterile.
My guess would be that you will not find either readily available let alone on dwarfing stock.

I also think that for zone 5 both would be marginal and would probably be killed by a test winter although you might not get one for 20 years. Cropping might be erratic. I think you might be better off waiting until the new University of Saskatchewan cultivars (listed by DNA Gardens) are available in the U.S. I expect it will not be long. For the moment if you are really impatient you might try Evans/Bali and net it so you can ripen the fruit fully.

I've been told that sweet cherries aren't recommended around here (in Nebraska), but I'm thinking of giving them a try, anyway. If they don't work out, I'll just rip them out and try something else. So next spring, I'd like to plant two sweet cherry trees on Gisela 5 dwarfing rootstock.

I've seen at least two nurseries (Raintree and Adams County) that offer sweet cherries on this rootstock, but there are a LOT of different varieties,... and they all look good. Anyone care to give me a couple of recommendations? Ideally, I'd prefer that they ripen at different times (but bloom about the same time, for pollination) or that they are not identical in taste. But maybe some varieties would better than others in my climate?

Thanks much,
