Thank you - I agree on the rugosas; first try on this a couple of years
ago, for hips (rosa rugosa alba). Worked well, so thought I'd try more
this year, so in the spring got dart's dash, fru dagmar hartopp, snow
pavement, moje hamerberg (blanc double de coubert & roseraie de l'hay).
And for good measure on hips, rosa virginiana. Looking forward to fall!

But for some reason, to me all the rugosas smell like soap. Which is
fine (may be keeping the japanese beetles away, along with the jujube?
- so far, the grapes have no beetle damage, and the jujube never did).

But need some scent to divert me from the constant reminder of
impending laundry; thus the further rose consideration (and some vague
memory of scented roses).

Variegata di Bologna (which I believe is a Bourbon rose) is a winner
here. Also, if you don't want to spray or prune and you don't need
something refined-looking, rugosas are hard to beat.
