Dan:

Unless your willing to do a legit pest management program (and "organic" will not work for Tree fruits in Indiana...we'll perhaps persimmons, asian pears...although codling moth may be a factor), I'd simply stick with asian pears.  And they can have periodic problems with codling moth and stink bugs.  Plus if you don't heavily and annually thin agressively fruit size will be marbles.

If you are willing to do a legit and min. spray schedule, you might try some of the salicina hybrid plums  like Alderman, Waneta, Toka (small but wonderfully flavored), etc.  Peaches/nectarines are dicely in your location due to pest pressures, sub zero winter temps (flower bud kill and trunk/limb damage).  If you are willing to risk, I'd recommend only Contender peach.  Reliance will make it as well, but fruit quality ain't that great.

Most all tart or pie cherries will make it in your area.  Meteor, North Star and Surefire are all naturally small trees and the only major pest is birds and they are not as bad as they are on Sweet Cherries which are extremely difficult to grow in the midwest due to winter damage and diseases.

     Good luck.

Ed, So. Indiana.....almost heaven.....spring is springing here..

I am located in Upland, IN, north of Muncie about 20 miles.  I am part of a small 50 member CSA and we want to start a small orchard.  Mainly, to serve the members and then grow from there.
I have determined that pears, and asian pears will do well here (pomes are grown locally for members already, so looking to branch out), any recommendations for peaches, nectarines, and plum varieties, and/or other fruit types that are uncommon but that could do well?

Thanks

I have picked up from some letters lately that pruing some apples in the winter encouraged tons of water sprouts and that some varieties are better pruned in the summer to avoid that.  Is that true?  What varities are better summer-pruned and when is a good time to do that?  Jerry in southern Indiana
