I have always tried to rub off new sprouts on the root stock as they
appeared, unless the scion was obviously dead--then I would let a sprout grow
and try the root stock again next spring. But I have only been grafting with
any success for a couple of years.

Thanks for the advice. I am being very, very patient. I have done almost a
dozen split grafts this spring with apples. So far, no growth on the grafted
wood but the root stock keeps showing new growth. Should I remove the new
growth on the rootstock in an attempt to get the tree to focus its energy on
the grafted wood? Thanks.
