MessageHi Randall,
I sure you'll get lots of good feedback from grafters much more competent
than I, but allow me to share what happened to my grafts this spring. It
was the first time I've ever grafted and the results were pretty dismal. I
grafted 8 and had 2 takes (maybe three, I'm still holding out on one. It is
still showing a little green but not growing.) Notwithstanding the
overwhelming failure, I still can't help feeling a happy about the two that
are growing. It's like a miracle that a stick can actually grow on a
different root. It's a miracle I say.
I grafted the trees in the middle of April. One of the sucessful takes
showed a little green on the buds and then started to turn a pale green like
it was going to die. It was then I spotted some green foliage from the
rootstock hidden under the tape and removed it right away. The buds did
nothing more for a long time, but the other day, they started growing again.
I think the buds may have originally stalled because of the rootstock
growth. I've read the same.
7 out of 8 of the grafts showed some amount of growth, but one graft took a
long time to do it, at least three weeks of fairly warm weather. As I said,
in the end most of the grafts died back. But it was fun doing it. And I
hope you have better sucess than I.
God bless,
Mark Angermayer

Thanks for the advice. I am being very, very patient. I have done almost a
dozen split grafts this spring with apples. So far, no growth on the grafted
wood but the root stock keeps showing new growth. Should I remove the new
growth on the rootstock in an attempt to get the tree to focus its energy on
the grafted wood? Thanks.
