One feature of beach plums I've never seen discussed is that they appear to be quite resistant to plum curculio. I examined fruit from areas where curculio is known to exist and the fruits had one interesting feature - most of them had one tiny little drop of hardened sap on them. From what could be determined, the species seems to be able to react to curculio egg laying by immediately encasing the egg in sap, sealing it up and killing it.

Chris,

We are in a Zone 4 in Ontario, we have grown the Beach Plum for over 35
years now and have made some
selections based on taste, size, and bearing habits. Most of the small
trees produce fruit a little larger than the size of a nickel and we just
enjoy eating them right from the trees. They bear very abundantly year
after year. They are
excellent for making jelly or jam. Over this time period they have never
been bothered with disease or insects.
They have withstood temperatures to below -35 degrees F.
