I recently did a little reading on the red sports, and got the idea they might be
easier to grow than the regular, because of this lower vigor. (Slightly more
dwarfed, easier branch training, possibly better fireblight resistance, etc.) Did I
make the correct assumption? Or do they have other problems which would make the
show-stopping visuals not worth the bother?
My single/minimal experience is with Summer Blood Byrne, a red-fleshed pear, which I planted nearly 10 years ago, as a nice, well-branched graft. It contracted fireblight the first year, and blighted back almost to the graft union before I got it pruned out. Has regrown nicely, but has yet to bloom or fruit. No FB in the interim, while a Clapp's Favorite and Seckel, planted next to it have since succumbed to FB.

suppose to be a good keeper. I have Birne Red (red fleshed) but it also have not
produced yet. Thanks-Ray
