There are a lot of micro climates that the maps cannot take into consideration. The best way I believe is to just go by the zone temperatures, such as zone 7b - low is 5 to10 degrees, if that is your low temperature average then that is your zone regardless of what any map says. If you are not sure ask some longtime (reasonable) residents in your area about the average lows or your local weather service. Keep in mind that the zone does not take into consideration extreme fluxations, such as 50 year lows, you are just looking for the average winter lowest temperatures.

Hi Jim,

Same reason there are Toyotas and Fords. People have different wants.

I do not rely on the maps at all anymore. I have a thermometer that
records the highs and lows. The micro climate here does not match the
zone maps at all.

My zone seems to be in flux right now. Lower winter temps, last 4-5 years.

I take the zone map as a very rough guide. I hope somebody develops a
better tool.

Later,
Tom

What good are all of the other wannabee climate zone maps? The USDA

is in general use by catalog plant sellers; can you imagine the

each used a different one? Do the other climate zone map authors hope
that
catalogers will adopt theirs?
