Burying green growth is more likely to make it rot. Wait until frost, which will knock off the leaves and kill back anything that hasn't hardened, THEN bury the dormant shoots. Leaves are good if you have enough, though in some you might get mice or voles which would chew the wood and eat buds. Soil reduces that likelyhood.
