You can always "hill" a tree for better drainage.

We have very heavy clay too, and fruit trees in general don't like
clay, but if you have good soil drainage it's probably fine. Do
read up on rootstocks, as some are better on sand and others on
clay, and make sure you get one suited to your conditions; we have
M-111 or M-7 (semi dwarf), but I do have a couple on M-26 (dwarf)
that seem to be surviving.
I rush off and buy inappropriate things, I thought I'd ask for some
suggestions on apples to add to my little orchard.
Conditions: SE Ohio in the Appalachian hills...zone 5 or 6 depending
on what map you look at. HEAVY clay soils. Planting area is on a
Lisa in Ashland Oregon
USDA Z7 - Sunset Z7 - 1800' - 19" annual rainfall
