- Subject: [NAFEX] Apple Pruning?
- Date: Sun, 06 Feb 2005 13:26:14 -0500
Hello All,
Is it ever appropriate not to do any pruning on a young apple tree?
I have a Court Pend Plat that is very suseptible to powdery mildew, similar to how Cortlands react to PM. I learned this last year when I shifted away from captan after petal fall. The tree fruited (first fruiting) but overall tree vigor was impaired by PM for the rest of the season. I could not get a handle on it. I only have 6-8" of new seaonal growth and wonder if I should prune at all this season.
The apples were very good, and I will use appropriate chemicals this year to stay ahead of the PM.
Thanks,
Tom
