Perhaps not. They need a certain amount of warmth to ripen. Quoting, again, from my book, "the fruit needs enough summer warmth and about 160 days to ripen, or about 2600 growing degree days calculated between fifty and eighty-six degrees Fahrenheit (USDA Hardiness Zones 4 through 8)."

Pawpaw is another name for the tropical fruit papaya. The cold-hardy
pawpaw, to -30 degrees F. or colder, is Asimina triloba, a delicious
fruit tasting somewhat like vanilla custard and banana. My book
Uncommon Fruits for Every Garden has a whole chapter on the cold-hardy
pawpaws, which also are pest-free and require little or no pruning.

But will they bear fruit in an area with summer nights often
down into the low 40s?
