Sharpen only the free or far side of the sharp part of the scissor. Do NOT sharpen the side which meets the other part of the scissor. These 2 faces must meet flat-against-flat to make a cut, and sharpening the inside puts a slight bevel on it which acts like a wedge and won't let the 2 faces meet. Think of a manual paper-cutter, and how you have to push slightly in as well as down to get a clean cut.

One of those things which is easier to show than to write. Can someone please edit the above for better clarity ?!

Hello All,

Up until last year I used inexpensive pruning shears. These
were the type that the blade came against the flat, bottom
cutting base. Last year I bought a moderatley priced pair
of bypass pruners (secateurs). They work great, but how do
you sharpen bypass pruners? They will last for years, and
could stand a touch-up sharpening now.

I assume that the same sharpening procedure would work for
bypass loppers as well.

It was never an issue in the past, for inexpesive pruners
usually broke before they went dull.

Thanks,
Tom
