That's a problem with 'common' names - they often vary widely from area to area; for example, 'tulip tree' to me is the tulip/yellow poplar Liriodendron tulipifera, but to many folks, 'tulip tree' is Magnolia soulangeana.

Conyza is mainly called 'mare's tail' around here, but I know folks who call it horseweed.

I'm still suspecting that horse nettle(S.carolinense), a Solanum species related to tomatoes/potatoes - or one of the other native nightshade species was probably the rootstock in question.
