Xanthoceras sorbifolium. Ive also heard it called Mandarin Chestnut. Seems to me to be a neglected species relegated to the "minor nut" category that could use more brave souls to grow it out & select for better nuts.

Wonder if they need cross pollination to be viable? I usually buy my seeds from JH Hudson early spring, throw em in the fridge for a month or so & then plant up in potting mix & they germinate in a hot greenhouse readily. What town is your friend's tree growing in? mIEKAL
