Dear Lucky,

The native Texas/Louisiana crab, Malus platycarpa, would bear well in
zone 8. My tree (zone 9) is full of 1-1.5" in diameter crabapples right now.
These trees are vigorous and nice looking. I have no idea if its crabapple
is edible, I never have had the inclination to try. Unfortunately, this
cultivar does not serve well as a rootstock for quality apples. Possibly, it
would be compatible with other crabs. I have never seen other crabapples in
the Houston area.

Regards, Ethan

edible crabs might work for them.

I suspect that 'Callaway', which is really more of an ornamental type, but

produces sizeable tasty fruits would work for him, but if he can also grow

some of the better ones, such as Chestnut, Wickson, Centennial, Kerr, etc.

Does anyone on the list know, or have access to a table listing the
approximate chill requirements for any of the above?

Thanks,
