Boston is solidly zone 6, and protected areas in boston support zone 7 plants, as do the more coastal neighborhoods. I don't know if rooftops get substantially colder. How high are these roofs? And how close to the water? And how much heat leaks through the roofs?

I bet you can plant most zone 6 fruits in these planters without much trouble. I'd worry more about summer drought.

Some friends are doing a community service project planting trees and
vegetables in large (roughly 9 ft x 9 ft) cement planters on a roof top in
Boston. (Zone 5-6) They asked me what to plant for fruiting trees. These
planters are definitely stationary, so the trees will have to stay outside
all winter.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
