Hi,
Have you considered Honey Locust? It spreads wide and grows very fast, the
fern-like leaves offer light shade under which certain crops can be grown
(small tree nursery, lettuce in the hottest part of the summer), it's a
fantastic honey crop for a multitude of insects with a good timing between
the last apple blossom and the white clover, it provides nitrogen to the
soil being the same family as beans, and it produces long pods with edible
small peas very high in protein that can be eaten in times of famine!
You can prune it as you go to spread above head level and install a patio
underneath in 10 years time.
