Art - Honey Locust, (Gleditsia trancanthos) - is a medium to large tree that
often has the thorns you speak of - there is great variation in the amount
of thorns between specimans and thornless selections have been made for the
ornamental trade - it is a pretty good tree tht furnishes light shade - it
is possible to grow partial shade tolerant species under it -
Black Locust (Robinia pseudo-acacia) is the fence post tree - wood is quite
rot resistant, very hard, and is actually the best of the two specie for
honey production (a very good honey from its nectar) - it is a medium tree
and usually has small (rose size) thorns, particularly on young wood -
often seen along inter-state haighways - is a legume - usually 'poor' form -
spreads by root suckering - a useful tree, but not generally used for
'shade' - regards, DOUD
