I'm kinda coming in on the tail end of this thread but it sounds to me like
what you have is hop clover. The plant looks like a miniature of common
clover.
The Audubon Field guide to Wild Flowers has a good picture of it. Ive got
scads of it in my lawn, I just mow it with the rest of my weeds.
