Del said - I have, until this year, exactly one successful plum graft to my
name ...
Now I'm concerned. Prior to reading that, I thought 5 of 6 plum grafts I did
this spring are well on their way. But I'm a rank amateur compared to Del.
These are bark grafts and sure look good so far, with the successful ones
each having a few inches of new growth. I followed bark grafting directions
Gordon so kindly sent me last year. My only change to his directions was to
use parafilm instead of grafting rubbers and to paint the exposed cut wood
and the end of the parafilm with Doc Farwell's.
At what point does one consider a graft a success? Should I not declare
victory until the wrapping comes off and the scion remains in the tree or do
I wait until the new union survives the first winter icing?
