Title: Re: [NAFEX] black locust
I'm not a preacher, but I'll preach this: everyone who chooses to grow invasive plants, and those plants with the potential for being invasive, has an obligation to everyone else who chooses not to...to educate themselves and to take seriously the potential threat they are promoting.
From: "Griffin Gardens"
Well, as I've said, where I am Black Locust does not seem to be invasive. But some of you may have been misled by my humor and irony. Seriously, where I live, the European species Sweet Cherry, Pear, and Apple are all invasives. There are volunteer work parties grubbing pear trees out of the wet prairies, and in many places you can't find pure native Malus fusca anymore, just hybrid crab apples.
So what should I do about these noxious pests? People just keep planting more of them!
Obviously, it's a question of degrees, a question of place. The northern Midwest's problem with Buckthorn is more like what I experience with Himalyan blackberry or English Ivy; nonetheless, the invasiveness of the three species above is real. And laws are being proposed for the whole US, although very few species that may be a problem for me will be a problem for you, and vice versa.
