A little point of interest here...
MN 447 is the female parent of Keepsake, whose cross was made in 1936,
selected in 1947 and released in 1979. It is also probably parent of Sweet
16 (although some references mention that Sweet 16 is from MN 477, but this
probably was due to a typing error). Sweet 16 was crossed in 1937, selected
in 1950 and released in 1978.
So, MN 447 existed before 1935, as it was used for these crosses. This
makes it 70 years old at least - a lot more than any patent would last.
Given this, does it make any sense that it would still be protected?
For my part, I bought it from a nursery in Canada. However, this nursery
have stopped offering it since. But I have the variety and haven't signed
any non-propagating agreement...

Are there any folks on the list who've been successful growing Pawpaws =
in colder climates (Zone 5)? There was an interesting discussion about =
these fruits on NPR earlier today and I'm interested in at least trying =
a few plants up here in coastal Maine. The thing that concerns me most =
is that the flowers reputedly smell awful and need to be pollinated by =
carrion flies, which may require nailing a dead possum (or the =
equivalent) to a nearby tree to attract them. How bad IS the smell when =
they're in bloom? Is it bad enough that Pawpaw trees should simply not =
be planted near one's house? What's a safe distance?

Any/all feedback appreciated.

John
