Tom:

My interest is not in permanent storage, just electronic access to back
issues of POMONA. I suppose if one wants permanent then a good rap to the
Mormons in Alta Utah would do the job.

CD-ROMs are a good method for distributing large amounts of data. I don't
think it would take too many CD-ROMs to hold the all of the back issues of
Pomona. That would be a good product to sell. There are however at least
two problems that I know of with using CD-ROMs as archival storage. The
first is a materials problem. CR-ROMs can delaminate if they are not stored
under the proper conditions. The second is the problem of hardware. How
many people have 8-track tapes or 5 1/4 inch floppies that they don't have
the equipment to use? This can happen with CD-ROMs also. My library has
some early CD-ROMS that we cannot use any more because we no longer have the
right equipment to read them. It is not always easy to migrate information
from one format to another. An example is migrating your LP collection to
cds. It can be done but it is not always easy or cheap to do. Many
librarians do not consider CD-ROMs to be a good method for permanent storage
of information. Books and magazine printed on good quality paper will
outlast CD-ROMs but I still would probably still probably purchase the back
issues of Pomona on CD-ROM if they were available.

Rodney:

That is a good idea.

All of that may be true however archived data can also be stored on
CD-ROMs which would not only protect the data from viruses but also is a
very convenient method of making data available. I wouldn't mind paying
for a copy of all the past Pomonas in PDF format shipped to me on a
CD-ROM. That way I could print out 15 or more hard copies of various
articles and then go lay ny the fire with a glass of wine and read, and
dream........ Shucks I'd even except the articles in ordinary text
format.
