I also like to plant early, but it's not always possible, depending on the location of the supplier. If they are in a warm enough area that their trees have already broken dormancy by the time it's warm enough for you to put them in the ground, you can't plant safely until you are past the hard frosts. Depending on the SUMMER hardiness of the plant, this may not be until near you last frost date. Similarly, I like to plant in the fall, but nurseries with warmer weather can't ship for fall until their plants go dormant, which might be too late for it to "settle in" in my backyard.
This is one reason to prefer nurseries with a similar climate to yours, or a little bit colder. It's just a lot easier to ship plants under optimal conditions.
For trees from NE and the midwest, I try to get shipping in March or September. From the Pacific NW and the SE, I generally settle for mid-to-late April, and have even taken tender stuff in May.

Trouble I had with Southmeadow, ignores the ship date I requested, wants
to ship way too late, ignores my calls to ship now, doesn;t keep an up

tree in inventory. By the time you find out it's too late in the season
to get it somewhere else. I allways have the goal of finishing my
plantings by April 1. This way seldom do I ever lose a tree or have to
water much after planting. Beware of nurserys that have this attitude
they know what's best for you.Lee Elliott APPLE HILL ORCHARD WINCHESTER,
