Chris Mauchline asks how many bushel baskets to buy. My recommendation
would be to start scouring garage sales and collecting apple crates.
They hold a true bushel (that can be helpful when you take them to the
press. since it sounds like you're in it for the cider), and will last a
lot longer than the cheap bushel baskets that you will find at feed
stores. And you can repair apple crates, but once a bushel basket
starts to go, it's pretty much shot. Even though those are dwarfing
rootstocks, you could easily end up needing two or three dozen, maybe
more. Your need will grow as your trees do. If you go with baskets,
you'll be replacing the older ones before your trees reach maturity and
your yield starts to level off.

I didn't respond to the census question. I have 17 scaffolds (7 apples,
2 plums, 2 peaches, 5 tart cherries, and a sweet cherry) with more than
100 varieties grafted on. Plus two varieties of red raspberries, two
black currants, and some rhubarb. I really want to experience the full
variety of what is out there. I'd love to share info and yields with
anybody in SE Michigan who wants to sample different varieties.
