I'ld recommend picking a variety of sizes, colors and
flavors initially so you can make up some fancy fruit
boxes for relatives, ie, Kandil Sinap, pitmaston
pineapple, red-fleshes like hidden rose, big guys like
spigold or the exquisite sweet 16 (if people can grow
Northern spys in your clinate zone), edible crabs like
chestnut or transcendant, russets, even really good
red delicious strains (like hawkeye). play around
with a lot of exotics early on, then fill in with
reliable, easy care apples (like Mr. Fackler
reccommended) later. Also remember to pick a viariety
of flavors so you can make high quality cider to deal
with all the less than perfect/drops you will have.
Again, the crabs are a great choice to make cider that
doesn't taste like store-bought. Boy, they look great
in the Spring!
