What's the current "common knowledge" about using wildlife shrubs for feeding birds, so they have something to feed on other than our desireable fruits ? For example, robins & others have just about cleaned up my Pagoda Dogwood berries, other dogwoods will be ripenning as Fall progresses. Are birds more likely to feed from these than from domestic grapes & apples, if wild fruit is abundant ? What's the best distance from the orchard to make must use of this ? That is, what is far enough away so that they will avoid an orchard full of deterrents & dogs & people, yet not too far away so they think such an orchard is still an oasis ?

Hi,

I agree with Del totally. I waited for my grapes to start turning color before I put up my scare
devices. You do not want the pests acclimated to them.

I try to keep my deterrents cheap, and move their locations daily.

Keep in mind that they are only "deterrents" and nothing works 100%.

I am still getting 1-2 brave birds willing to overlook the mean looking mylar balloons floating
over the arbor, the spinning windmill with 5' blade spans, a decoy owl, and 2 rubber snakes. But
I will take 1-2 birds over the flock that was just sitting on the arbor waiting for ripe grapes,
that were there before I put up the deterrents.

Birds... A tough battle.

Later,
Tom
