I planted two miniature pear trees each in 10-gallon cans this spring. They
were bare root and have grown nicely throughout the season. I still cannot
put them in the ground due to job-related reasons, but I have to carry them
through my Zone 4b Wisconsin winter. Then, I will be able to finally plant
them in a permanent spot.
My question is: what do you experts suggest for winter protection?
I had thought about wrapping the black plastic tubs in bubble wrap with two
layers of burlap over that. Then I thought I'd drag the cans to the north
side of my garden shed, which is not heated. My thinking is that the trees
will stay frozen there and will not thaw during warm winter spells. Any
thoughts?
