Victoria,

I use a washer which is about 2" wide and has a 1/2" hole in the middle.

I put this over the rootstock when I am about to make the cut for the cleft
graft. If the knife slips, it hits the washer before it hits my fingers.

I use this washer also when doing the 'tongue' part of a whip and tongue.

I've saved myself many cuts by using this washer.

I was given the washer and it is plastic and I don't know where to get more
or I'd be distributing them to my grafting friends
