Hello All,

While waiting for a response from our group experts I did a
little research on plant hormones. There are two types that
I think are of interest to us: 1) Auxin, 2) Cytckinin.

Both of these hormones are related to root and shoot
development. When these hormones are balanced the plant
grows normaly.

When auxin is decreased and cytckinin is increased new
shoots are enhanced.

When cytckinin is decreased and auxin is increased root
formation is enhanced.

So for the sake of argument let's assume the wound from
pruning triggers an imbalance of Auxin - Cytckinin at the
wound site. Auxin is decreased and cytckinin is increased.
This imbalance could result from the wound alone, or
sunlight breaking down auxin in the bark (assuming that when
a branch is removed more sunlight enters the area).

If you were to treat each pruing wound with Auxin (rooting
hormone), and try to force the area back to a normal balance
between the two hormones, could new shoots from pruning be
controlled? If you blocked the sun from breaking down auxin
in the bark could new shoots be controlled? Is this just
way off base?

Ideas, opinions?

Thanks,
Tom
