Wild pawpaws usually are large hen sized. Davis, and Prolific get up to a
pound and more.

I had the same experience when I planted pawpaw seeds or trees from
northern stock in the Houston, Texas area. I collected seeds from wild
pawpaws in northeast Texas and have gotten good growth and fruit albeit
small fruit size.
