Hi Del:
Recommend you strongly consider Bernie's comments regarding grafting
tender cultivars on framework of super-hardy cultivar. John, David,
Clark, Ure all qualify as hardiest pears. I have no first-hand
experience but have read reports that they are very ornamental and
barely edible.
Bernie noted that winter damage most likely to happen on trunk and
scaffold limbs. Makes sense to have those hardiest cultivars
available.
