Tremendous imput on this inquiry, thanks!
I must admit, these last 4 relatively mild winters have lulled me into
feeling like I live in zone 4 and the world is full of possibilities.
Bernie's post is always a good reality check for me. The winter we got minus
55F was before I planted any of my orchard. Won't stop me from trying
though. I'll be planting some in 'wild' locations to see if competing with
grasses etc. might slow growth, increase FB resistance, and produce hardier
trees. All our land is hilly with areas of meadows, forest, and pasture, so
there is abundant choices for various micro-environments.
The only possibilities I have in the ground for rootstock are a number of p.
usuriensis and abundant craetagus wild hawthorn. I intend to start grafting
OHXF onto the hawthorn this coming spring as interstem.
Would there be value in using it as an interstem over the ussuriensis as
well for added compatability?
How is OHXF for hardiness?
Should I top work with it or ?
Should I try another rootstock?

The other day two stray dogs came runnning through , I need some of those
rock hard pears for ammunition! On the vein
of poorly palatable pears, does it take a good eating pear to make good
dried fruit? how about sause or juice? combined with other fruit?

Thank you all again for such thoughtful imput, I'll be condensing it into my
notebok shortly, Del
