I would second all Del says about using window screening for tree guards and add one other virtue. Provided you keep the top fold/opening relatively snug with spring-applied staples, the screening keeps out the round-headed borer from gouging the bark at the soil line and laying as many as seven eggs. A few females will put an egg or two just above the screening in a cut slit but this is so rare compared to the doom of borer grubs that burrow in below the soil line.
