It may be a good idea to break down rooting of cuttings into stages:
1) Root initiation (root primordium formation);
2) Growth of the primordium inside the stem;
3) Extension of the primordium through the epidermis or callus;
4) Establishment of the root.
Almost all species of willow carry an abundance of
root initials, preformed in the stem on the tree at a very early growth
stage. In most species these root initials are most abundant at the
nodes, but frequently they also occur in "combs", originating in the vascular
strands. Some of these root primordia complete stage 2 and sometimes
stge 3 on the intact shoot. Willow cuttings are made to permit these
preformed initials to grow and erupt through the epidermis.
Peaches and almost all other Prunus do not
have preformed root initials. Root initiation, the first step in regeneration
by cuttings, is therefore carried out off the mother plant. Application
of "hormones" (PGRs) is made to produce these root initials, usually in
the same tissues as in willow. Persuading the PGR-induced initials
to grow and erupt (the second and third phases) follows.
On willow, there is often at least a rudimentary
connection between the stage 2 primordium and the vascular system of the
cutting. On peach, etc., this connection occurs quite late in the
game.
Incidentally, most of the Malling and Malling-Merton
apple rootstocks initiate a few root germs not far behind the growing tip.
