Kim, In my search for a rootstock that would do well here in the cool wet
maritime climate of Ketchikan, Alaska, I chose EMLA 7 because it was the
only rootstock that was described as doing well in heavy wet soils. In fact
in all of the descriptions of other rootstocks it is hard to find a
descrption of the soil types they do best on. The exception being M 106
which is described as doing best in the dry sandy soils of the south. Since
I am running out of room here at my nursery I was interested in Bud 9, P-2
and P-22, but when I asked the question: "Which one does best on heavy wet
soils?" nobody could answer my question. Another interesting comparison
would be EMLA 7 vs. Geneva 30. I haven't tried the Geneva 30 yet but it is
supposed to be similar in size but superior to EMLA 7 in production of
fruit. But once again no description of the soil type it does best on. The
next time I am down your way I would like to visit your project. Jerry
Appleseed.
