Personally, I've not tried chip budding in the summer - I usually do a T-bud for apples/pears/persimmons/dogwoods or coin-purse bud for nut trees when summer budding.
Bark needs to be slipping well to do either of these procedures.
I collected some persimmon & James hican budwood this week while on an out-of-county trip. But it's so dry here that I can't bud at the moment - bark's stuck tight; can't pry it loose; so I'm watering some of my seedlings heavily in hopes of getting them rehydrated enough to try to salvage some of this budwood before it gets too old.
Use one bud per rootstock

Subject: [nafex] Chip budding
Quick question before I go home tonight... I received some benchgrafted apple trees this spring and some of the unions did not take. I have just received some replacement scionwood to graft (chip bud) onto the rootstock. Question is, how many chip buds do I attempt on each rootstock? Does it depend on the length available, or so I keep it to one per rootstock?
Thanks in advance,
