Title: Chip budding
Brian,

Has the rootstock grown up about 2'?     You'll need good growth in the rootstock in order to have success budding now.

In most of my failed spring grafts, the rootstock is only about 12-16" tall and I don't think that's enough growth to callus well now.

See what others say ... e.g Lucky Pittman

Use one bud per rootstock

Subject: [nafex] Chip budding

Quick question before I go home tonight... I received some benchgrafted apple trees this spring and some of the unions did not take.  I have just received some replacement scionwood to graft (chip bud) onto the rootstock.  Question is, how many chip buds do I attempt on each rootstock?  Does it depend on the length available, or so I keep it to one per rootstock?

Thanks in advance,

Brian Raby
