There are some fleece socks available that should be warmer than
common cotton-type socks if you can’t use wool. - - - - - - Jorene Downs SAR & CERT Mounted SAR From: msar-riders-bounces@lists.ibiblio.org
[mailto:msar-riders-bounces@lists.ibiblio.org] On Behalf Of Laurie
Hanahan Being very allergic to wool,
I can’t even wear them with other socks as a liner. So you can
imagine the difficulty I have in finding warm socks that aren’t
wool. I’ve resorted to wearing heavy hiking socks with the air
activated toe or foot warmers whenever the temps drop below 50.
They stay warm for well over 8 hours. I also figure they might come in
handy for whomever we are searching for – so I carry extras and the
waist/back warmers and hand warmers just in case. Any recommendations for warm
non-wool socks are appreciated! Laurie Hanahan TROTSAR From: msar-riders-bounces@lists.ibiblio.org
[mailto:msar-riders-bounces@lists.ibiblio.org] On Behalf Of Kate
Beardsley For what its worth: I ride in hiking boots. Whatever kind fits
me well and supports me when I hike. The kind that have strong ankle support
and a deep tread for great traction when I'm on foot. I feel that being
equipped with good hiking footwear is critical when on SAR missions. We never
know when we'll end up on foot for an extended period. Now I realize that many people can go on
and on about the need for smooth leather soles to meet safety criteria. Safety
is important! But instead of changing my footwear, I change my stirrups. I have
smooth metal stirrups on my saddles so that I can wear safe functional footwear
and still maintain a high safety level. This way, if I end up riding several
miles before dismounting to perform some, say, tracking duties, I have no need
to change footwear. And I'm a SmartWool fan, so there's no doubt about
what kind of socks I wear. Safe Trails, Kate Kate Beardsley ...building relationships ...developing athletes ..."driven" to excellence Central
