At the end of a long day, it is hard, very hard. I use whatever
aids I can find. Usually I'll stand on something, or have the
horse stand in a ditch or gully.

I'll tell you a little story. I am "not young" myself, but more
to the point I spend some months with about 20 other people in a
very remote place with a lake but no running water. Everyone
bathed in the lake, off a massive log. The top of the log was
about 12 inches out of the water, and it was all slimy. The
lake had no bottom, only bottomless muck, nothing to stand on.
At the start of our time there, only a few of us could get out
of the water onto the trunk without belly flopping on it, and
most of us needed someone else to help pull us out. By the end
of the trip everyone, including several people much older than
I, could get out by themselves and without belly flopping. The
trick was maybe 1 part strength and 4 parts timing. Just like
mounting a horse. It takes practice.
