Hi Ellie. There have been many, many discussions about horse and
rider certifications on MSAR-Riders in the past. Have you searched
our web archive? Link on http://www.ibiblio.org/msar/msar-riders
A national standard necessarily is a lowest common denominator, but
you are located in Tucson, which has a climate very different than
much of the United States. You're probably better off identifying
what are the most important requirements for coping with your climate.
For example, you should expect many night searches. Because night
searching relies more than day searching on the horse's vision, one
aspect of your certification may be a veterinary eye exam for your
horse.
There are many MSAR and other SAR groups established in your state,
Arizona. So a first step for you would be to contact them and ask
them what are their most important criteria that can be tested for.
Your neighboring state New Mexico has a state standard, including
a short book to prepare individuals to pass the state test. Many
SAR responders come from Arizona to New Mexico to take the test,
usually at the annual New Mexico SAR conference. Some Arizona SAR
teams are recognized SAR resources in New Mexico. You can download
the book at no charge: http://www.nmesc.org/certification.htm
Please tell us more about you. Are you with a new team, or an old
one that is making improvements? What have you been doing in the
past, for horse and rider certification, and how does it not work
for you now?
Thanks,
Una Smith
